Literature Analysis #1

1) Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is about two laborers in California who hustle work were they can. They plan to live on the fat of the land once they earn enough money to own their own acres. George helps Lennie to remember how to act and what and what not to say. Everything seems within their reach until a flirtatious woman leads Lennie to do something he regrets, ending his life. The narrative fulfills the authors purpose by getting the overall message across through his writing. Everything is very nicely detailed and it reached my expectations perfectly.

2) The theme of the novel is the nature of human existence. Throughout the book everyone has a sense of loneliness and isolation that they are depressed about. They are so lonely, that they all want to confide in a friend, or even one that is a stranger.

3) The authors tone throughout the book, is sad and longing.  "He's awright. Just ain't bright. But he can do anything you tell him."(Pg. 22) "He spend half his time lookin' for her, and the rest of the time she's lookin' for him." (Pg. 53) "We'll live on the fatta the lan' an' rabbits." (Pg. 56) All of these quotes relate to either sadness or longing for hope, or a companion.

4) One literary element is imagery "The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool." The author explained this scene in great detail that gave you a great picture of what he wanted you to see. (Pg. 1) 2. Hyperbole "A path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool..." (Pg. 2) The path wasn't literally beaten by the boys, it is just a figure of speech. 3. Allusion "I wasn't kicked in the head with no horse, was I George?" (Pg. 23) The author was alluding to that fact that we should all know that being kicked in the head by a horse would mean we are stupid. 4. Allusion "I'll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with." (Pg. 47) The author references the devil, alluding to the fact that we should all know that the devil is in misery, because he lives in hell.

  2. I thought your analysis of theme was interesting. You said that the theme was the nature of human existence, and I thought that was creative. It wasn't something that most people would have imminently pulled out but yet you made the connection quickly and were able to back it up.

  3. Everything seems to be up to par on my understanding of the novel, besides the theme. I don't believe everyone was lonely and depressed, primarily only Benny was the one who wanted to have friends to play with and talk too. Overall it's exactly how I would do a lit analysis on this novel, just more descriptive examples.

  4. I like your insight on the literary elements and your textual evidence. The textual evidence you chose really supported the the literary elements you chose to analyze. Good job!
