Beowulf Essay

Beowulf is a character of great strength, wit and determination, which relates to one of our modern heroes today, known as Iron Man. Both Beowulf and Iron Man are mere mortals, but they both use their abilities to fight evil. Beowulf is compared to Iron Man in a myriad of different ways, including how they both have epiphanies that change their life, the tone of their stories give off the same meanings and in a way they are both symbols of hope.

Iron Man had his epiphany after given a second chance at life, which then he chose to use this chance to fight for the good of the people. His homemade powered machines were created by himself when he decided to use his brilliant mind for the glory of the people. Beowulf has his epiphany when he was about to fight Grendel and then decided to unarm himself, for he believed the only armor and weapons he needed was honor and strength. Both heroes realized their destiny was to fight evil and that they were given their gifts to use for good.

The tone throughout the story of Beowulf and Iron Man, are very determined and confident. After Beowulf killed Grendel, Grendel's mother sought after him to avenge her son's death. Beowulf then was determined to destroy Grendel's mom and gain the admiration of his men. Through the battle, Beowulf never gave up and he was able to defeat her. Iron man is constantly being sought after as well, because he becomes involved in every diabolical plot and diffuses all their plans. If Iron Man were to just give up, he would die and no one would be free, but he is confident that his ideas and inventions are durable and nothing will bring him down.

Beowulf and Iron Man are both symbols of hope in their stories. When you read about Beowulf going off to defeat the dragon, all of his companions abandon him except one and you realize that Beowulf is their only hope to survive. You start to put your trust in Beowulf and hope that he comes out with a victory every time. Iron Man is the same way, when the town is perilous and he is the only one capable of saving it. The people believe in him and know that where Iron Man is, there is hope for a safe life. Both of them symbolize hope due to their use of great strength, wit and determination.

The Heroes, Beowulf and Iron Man, may come from different times, but they both use their natural abilities to be the heroes they have become. In many ways they are the same, from their epiphanies, the authors tone towards them and the symbol of hope they represent. Iron Man and Beowulf are both but mortal humans, yet both heroes to us all.

  1. Whitney, I like the literary technique examples that you gave. I felt like you were missing the comparison of the how the heroes reflect their different cultures/time periods.

  2. Whitney,
Yay for Iron Man. You did great right off the bat picking two modern heroes and working to compare them throughout the essay in a creative way aside from just the normal cultural similarities. But to make this essay even better a little bit of contrast would also be great and add more depth to your argument and analysis. Also I really like how you ended your essay with a strong comparison showing their similarities despite their different backgrounds.

  3. Whitney, I think that your essay is good and you show that you understand Beowulf and the modern hero. Good job on showing how they are similar. I believe that you can go into more dept though just to make your examples stronger. Other than that your essay was well.

  4. Before I say anything about your essay, I just wanted to say that I love the background for your blog! It's pretty sweet... (pretty punny huh?)! Anyway, Whit, this essay had amazing examples of literary techniques and showed that you truly understood Beowulf! I would suggest that you add more details in order to make your comparisons and point stronger.

  5. To me your essay portrayed that you knew the prompt fairly well. I wasn't expecting to see anyone use Iron man as their character, but you seemed to do it very effectively. Like the people above stated, the only thing I saw that needed to be looked over were the strength of your examples.

  7. Whit! Your intro parahraph was really good! You made good points that followed in the body of your essay. I do have to agree with the other comments that you could have used stronger examples.
