Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel talks about Grendel, the monster who haunts and is an evil creature. They say this creature was to be punished forever by God and is split into a thousand forms of evil. He snatched up thirty men and brought them to his lair to slaughter. Grendel killed those when they slept but those who fled him were safe. Grendel would never king Hrothgar's throne in Herot, for it was protected by God. Beowulf and his men have gone to Hrothgar to fight the big, bad Grendel and defeat him once and for all. He wants to prove that he is the best and can defeat anything in his path. Every time one soldier tried to puncture Grendel's skin, they weren't able to, because he bewitched them. Beowulf kills Grendel, but then soon has to kill his mother. He finds a sword that could not be lifted easily by one man and strikes the monsters neck. Then he went to defeat a dragon who melted his shield, but he was able to injure him. He ended up dying and his follower still rode on in awe of their heroic leader!
